8.32am. Slept surprisingly well on a strange single mattress. My alarm woke me up at 7am, after the usual morning ablutions I switched the shower on, which ran for less than a minute and then stopped. Had a thorough wash in the sink. I will get someone out to fix the shower later on.
Went for breakfast, and ran into Tim in the queue for slurm. He slept quite badly; I suspect I will be hearing variations of this story for much of the day. I feel extremely hung-over, which is galling.
Breakfast was, unsurprisingly, a fried affair. Had a modest but hearty breakfast. Roy and Kirsten both slept badly, despite putting their mattresses together on the floor, and the conversation featured the word 'complaint' in it after only about a minute. I should have run a sweepstake on how long it would take them to complain; I seem to remember she complained after the first night at SXR103 too. But if you're uncomfortable, you're uncomfortable, it's as simple as that, and it's not as if these courses are free or even cheap.
Paul arrived at about 8.10am looking fine. Everyone seems to be fine, it's encouraging. I wonder how long it will last.
Whilst the catering is fairly basic, the dining room is at least fairly impressive, with portraits of presumably former vice-chancellors in frames around the room. I can easily imagine formal dinners in gowns with academics in gowns dining here, after Latin graces.
Off shortly for the electrical oscillations experiment. I do at least understand this one, which is good, so I am hoping there will be questions on the TMA about this.
