During dinner, Paul noticed that all the portraits of people notable in the university's history are middle-aged, white, balding men. Not a single woman even. It seems that university eschelons may be one of the few bastions of acceptable sexism left in this country.
After dinner, Paul, Andrew, Helen, another girl (whose name I can't remember) retired to the bar for a pint, and we talked about movies. Andrew bought a round, which was good of him.
David Keen's excellent lecture on general relativity has just finished. He is a good speaker, and I enjoyed the lecture, although I was starting to get a little uncomfortable on the hard seats in the Holgate conference room. I saw Andy texting his fiancée, saying that listening to the lecture made him feel like he was back in college himself.
Just about to head off to the bar; I don't want to go to be honest but I feel morally obliged to go and buy Andy a drink in return. I won't be staying late, I need another good night's sleep otherwise I will be no good in tomorrow's lab. More later on.
