Further info

One of the links from today's OU message was to the residential schools website. I've read this a dozen times probably, but for completeness' sake (especially since the OU residential schools are vanishing shortly), here is the bulk of that page (formatted much better than the OU manages it...)

Travel information

By car
Durham is off the A1M, between Scotch Corner and Washington. Leave at Junction 62, on the A690 Durham–Sunderland road or at Junction 61, on the A177. Follow the directional signs to the colleges or the designated OU car park, which is just off the South Road (A177), one mile south of the city centre. Please read the college-specific information about car parking. Please note that a toll barrier makes vehicle access to Hatfield College expensive.

Car parking: Car crime is still a growing ‘industry’ unfortunately, and neither The Open University nor Durham University can guarantee parking that is 100% secure. Because of this – and because of parking restrictions (see below) – students and staff are strongly encouraged not to bring cars to the Durham residential schools. If it is unavoidable, under no circumstances should valuables be left in your car. For those who have no other option, parking is available as follows (but please note that, at the time of going to press, all cars in all car parks will be required to display a Durham permit):

Hatfield College – A214: The very limited parking space at Hatfield College is reserved strictly for staff and Blue Badge holders. However, free parking is available in the Elvet Hill car park on Elvet Hill Road (see map). On arrival, we permit students to drop off their luggage at Hatfield College, but this is the only occasion on which student access by car is permitted. It should also be noted that the introduction of a toll barrier has made vehicle access to Hatfield College expensive (£2, payable on exit between 10:00 and 16:00 hrs). The Elvet Hill car park is one mile away from the college, and although it is patrolled regularly and equipped with video cameras, you are advised to check your car regularly. Elvet Hill car park is locked between 23:30 to 07:00 hrs. To get back to Hatfield College, ask at the Van Mildert or Collingwood College School Offices (see map).

Collingwood College – SXR260:
Only Blue Badge holders may park in the designated spaces in front of Collingwood College. Please obey the ‘No parking’ signs – the coaches used for field trips need room to turn in front of the main entrance – and on no account should anyone park in the turning circle of the forecourt. All other students will be able to use the designated car parks in the campus grounds.

Van Mildert College – DXR222:
Cars should be parked in the Mill Hill Lane car park further up Mill Hill Lane from Van Mildert College (see map), but you may drop off your luggage on arrival at the college.

Grey College – SXR207:
Staff and Blue Badge holders may park on the forecourt in front of Grey College, but space is very limited. Students are mainly advised to use the car park on Elvet Hill Road (see details above).

By train
Durham is located fifteen miles south of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. There are several long-distance through trains which arrive at Durham in the late morning or early afternoon. The train journey from Newcastle to Durham takes about 15 minutes and costs around £10.00 return. Taxis cost around £5.00 to/from the station. An extra charge will be included in the fare to cover the toll barrier charge (£2.00) for taxis to Hatfield College.

For Collingwood, Van Mildert and Grey Colleges, a special railway shuttle bus service will take students from the Railway Station to drop-off points near the colleges on the Saturdays of arrival from about 10:00 to 17:30. Please look for the Open University signs on the platform. The drop-off points are as follows:
Collingwood College: College forecourt.
Van Mildert College: Alongside OU car park on Elvet Hill Road, about 200 metres from the college.
Grey College: College forecourt.
The railway shuttle bus costs £2.00 payable on the bus itself (this cost includes the return journey if required). Times of return journeys will be posted on the school notice board.

For Hatfield College, Durham County Council operates a public bus service between the railway station and Palace Green (in front of the Cathedral). This service runs Monday to Saturday; first bus 07:55 then every 15 minutes until 09:20, then every 20 minutes until 17:40. Cost is £0.50 per journey.

By bus/coach
Durham bus station is located on North Road. Students for Grey, Collingwood and Van Mildert are advised to either take a taxi or else ask for directions to the railway station, where they can pick up the shuttle bus service. Students for Hatfield should ask for directions to the college, as the distance is walkable.

By air
The nearest airport is Newcastle International Airport. There is a direct metro line (part over-ground, part underground, local railway) from the airport to Newcastle Central Railway Station. This journey takes around 25 minutes and costs around £6.00 return, although special rates are sometimes available (see ticket machines for details). The train journey from Newcastle to Durham takes about 15 minutes and costs around £10.00 return. From Durham Tees Valley Airport, a free half-hourly coach service (Sky Express 737) is available for air passengers travelling to Darlington train station from which there is a regular and frequent train service to Durham. The train journey from Darlington to Durham takes about 15 minutes and costs around £9.00 return.
