Bits and pieces

I've been doing a fair bit of reading of the Experiments Handbook this weekend, to try and get prepared. When I did SXR103 I felt over-prepared. When I did SX208, I was under-prepared. This time I want it to be a happy medium.

Anyhoo the point of this blog post is to put up the rough timetable for my week. It's likely to be subject to small changes once I get to Grey, but here it is so far:

As for internet access at Grey College, there are mixed messages coming out from students who are doing SXR207 this week as we speak.

One guy whose bedroom is in Elvet East says that the WiFi is off there, but a lady also in Elvet East got online instead with an ethernet cable, after asking for a username and password from the Grey College office.

Other facilities appear to be inconsistent too. Bedding, towels and soap are provided throughout, which is good. Rooms in Holgate have tea and coffee making facilities, a large amount of desk and drawer space, and ensuite. Elvet East however is apparently not en suite (I hope to God it's not that same hovel Palmers Garth that I stayed in when I did M101), but the rooms do have 8 power sockets . Enough even for my collection of electronic gadgets.

As for extra-curricular, I read that the JCR has a kick-out time of 11.30pm. Eminently sensible; I am not keen to see a repeat of SXR103, where some people were up until the not-so-small hours of the morning drinking, then going into labs with potentially dangerous chemicals.

However Kingsgate Bar in the DSU (Durham Students Union) is open until 12am during the week, 2am at weekends. Count me out!
