Had coffee outside, and I stood with Duncan, Alex and a few others, talking about physics, astronomy and all sorts of things. That half hour seemed to fly by, and before long we were upstairs in the physics lab.
Duncan is my lab partner today, which is good, as he and I seem to get on pretty well.
We wound wire around the ferrite rods, used cable ties to tack them into place, soldered the connecting wires into place, and then soldered a resistor into the circuit. Measured the induced voltage across the coil, and we have just reached the stage where we are starting to examine the displacement of the coil voltage phase.
Sergei seems to be a bit of a hit with the academic staff, both Carol and Anne-Katrin seem to like him, which is good. I must remember to bring my wallet out with me for afternoon coffee.
After the lab finished at 12.45pm, we walked back up the hill to Grey, and in for lunch. The place was almost deserted. I opted for penne with chicken in a sauce. I didn't eat very much, it wasn't especially inspiring but it filled a gap. I had promised myself to try and avoid pasta this week wherever possible, but today's vegetarian option also had pasta in it, so I couldn't really win.
It was only when a couple of guys asked us whether we were with the OU that we realised the two of them were Grey students. When I looked again, one had a Durham sweatshirt on. Despite Durham being a posh toff place they seemed quite ordinary and down to Earth.
Rang home and chatted to Alan. It was good to touch base, I imagine he's not enjoying having the house to himself. I will make it up to him when I get back on Friday.
This afternoon should be good, it's more of the same, but we get to derive equations for induced voltages. Should be fun.
