Mass of electrons

11.25am. Having a good morning. We retook some measurements to try and get a better peak, which worked like a charm.

After some very fiddly calculations we worked out a figure for the mass of an electron, namely 480 MeV. This compares very well with the accepted figure of 511 MeV. Feeling very happy with that, and with the exception of two other groups (out of nine) we got the closest.

Now we are collecting all the results together at the various angles, and Tom and Nick are producing a graph on very large paper. This should prove the relationship between the angle of deflection and the Compton energy, as well as being able to prove that electrons act as particles as well as like waves too, under certain circumstances. A very good morning so far.

Looking forward to the afternoon off. Still feeling full from breakfast. Can't believe we will be served food in an hour and a half.

Duncan is happy today, as he found out that passed S207, despite his adverse circumstances. He is clearly very grateful to David Keen for his help and understanding. More proof that the man is a credit to the university. Mrs Keen must be a formidable woman!
