Just call Rentaghost

Okay I have a bit of a confession to make. Part of me is not really looking forward to being back in Durham again. When I took M101, my first Open University course, back in 1995, that had a compulsory residential school.

I elected to go to Durham (I think my other choices were Reading and somewhere in Scotland). It's a leafy, handsome city. However, my then partner and I were going through something of a rocky patch, and back in 1995 nobody had laptops with broadband internet access, or even mobile phones. Practically the dark ages, I hear you cry. I spent the week feeling isolated, stuck in that little room overlooking Elvet Riverside, and I came home, demoralised, to a house full of attitude. It's one of the reasons I gave up Open University study once that course had ended.

Consequently you can imagine how I feel at the prospect of spending another week there! But at least this time things are radically different!

In order to expunge a few ghosts (in fact, my only remaining ghosts from that unhappy time), I suggested a while ago that Alan and I go up to Newcastle for a long weekend, and that we go to Durham for a day as part of it. At least then I'll be able to pull out some good memories from 1995, take some photos, show him where I'll be studying during my week, and I'll feel more comfortable.

Plus Alan knows Newcastle well, so it'll be a great bit of nostalgia for us both. We're thinking about paying a visit around May Bank Holiday next year. Should be fun.
